Be Here Now: The Musical Box @ The Egg, 1/14/10

Canadian tribute band the Musical Box is focused on all things Genesis.

They made their Nippertown debut back in December, 2004, with a recreation of Genesis’ performance of the classic “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” at the Palace Theatre in Albany.

Last May, the band returned to town for a performance at Proctors in Schenectady, where they served up “A Trick of the Tail,” Genesis’ first post-Peter Gabriel album.

David Singer of The Daily Gazette raved, “To call The Musical Box a Genesis cover band is to sell it far short,” raved David Singer of The Daily Gazette. “It’s unfair to compare covers to originals — a different time and place in history — but I’ll say Musical Box would give their forefathers a run for their money.”

Now the Musical Box is bringing “A Trick of the Tail” back to town – this time performing it at The Egg in Albany on Thursday evening.

The Musical Box re-creates rather than interprets. “We’re not playing the band’s greatest hits or playing our own interpretation of Genesis music,” explains the Musical Box’s artistic director and archivist Serge Morissette. “We don’t do any improvisation or adaptation. That’s not what we do. Our purpose is to reconstruct the original show.”

As they did at Proctors, Nippertown’s own premier prog-rock combo, Fear of Flying, will open the show at 7:30pm.

These guys are the bomb. I saw them do The Lamb and then do Genesis Live. Amazing.
