Since I had such a good time the last time I went to the BSP Lounge in Kingston (read review here), I decided to give the lounge another try. This time, I chose an event featuring Sarah Fimm during her month-long Tuesday night residency.

The show was in four parts, with three small groups of musicians and then a large group for the finale.

Electronic sounds were imparted by David Baron with a duo that kept playing with knobs. This provided some ambient sound and a contrast to rest of the program. After some microphone problems were ironed out, Fiona McBain and Mike Visceglia spun classic-style songs and bass lines.

The third section of the evening’s procedings featured host Sarah Fimm and bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin. They played a couple of piano and bass numbers spotlighting the strong voice of Fimm. They had a crisp sound for that set.

Then Tony left the stage, and Fimm was joined by a larger group of musicians, offering a different vibe – a little less serious, perhaps. Fimm got off the piano for the final song, and a big chorus of sound wrapped up this tight two hours of music.
