3/22/14: Today’s Tips: Saturday

MUSIC: Betty @ MASS MoCA’s Club B-10, North Adams. As these irreverent pop-rockers approach 30 years of music-making, they are as current as ever. The band’s appearance at MASS MoCA coincides with the presentation of new music commissioned for work in the galleries; Darren Waterston’s installation “Filthy Lucre” features a voice and cello soundscape composed by the band. 8pm. $16 & $20; $10 students.

MUSIC: The Phantoms @ the Steamer No. 10 Theatre, Albany. It’s the Albany concert debut of Woodstock’s legendary a cappella powerhouse, serving up classic streetcorner doo-wop and more. Featuring Joe Veillette, Charlie Staxx, Brian Becker, Dorraine Scofield and Mike McDonough. 8pm. $15.

MUSIC: Fennig’s All-Star String Band @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. A mainstay at contra dances since forming in Albany in 1970, Bill Spence on hammered dulcimer, Toby Stover on piano, and George Wilson on fiddle, were among the first to make records featuring hammered dulcimer and, as such, ignited a revival of interest in the instrument. 8pm. $18.

THEATER: “Gypsy: A Musical Fable” @ Capital Repertory Theatre, Albany.”Everything’s Coming Up Roses…” Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill directs the classic musical based on the memoirs of famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, featuring a cast of 23 from Broadway star Mary Callanan to local TV personality Benita Zahn. 3 & 8pm. $20-$65. MUSIC: The Howard Alden All Star Trio @ the Van Dyck, Schenectady. Guitar master Howard Alden leads his sublime jazz trio that also features trumpeter Warren Vache and bassist Jon Burr. 7 & 9:30pm. $24. GO HERE for more info…

CABARET: Judy Kaye @ Club Helsniki, Hudson. The two-time Tony Award-winner serves up an evening of show tunes from the pens of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim to kick off the Helsinki on Broadway spring season of cabaret. 8pm. $50.

MUSIC: Eastbound Jesus @ the Hollow Bar + Kitchen, Albany. With the Mallett Brothers. 9:30pm. $12.

MUSIC/FUNDRAISER: Molasses Creek @ Delmar Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem. The veteran quintet plays fun, contemporary folk, with hearty helpings of Americana, jazz, swing/old-time and Celtic music. 7pm. Donations encouraged with all proceeds to benefit the Bethlehem Food Pantry.

MUSIC: Jeremy Spencer @ the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. A founding member of Fleetwood Mac and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Jeremy Spencer returns to the US in support of Send an Angel – making this his first U.S. four in 44 years. 9pm. $25. MUSIC: John Kribs @ the Parting Glass, Saratoga Springs. The North Country songsmith teams up with his son Orion Kribs on mandolin, guitar and bass and fab fiddler Doug Moody. 9pm.

THEATER: “Fiddler On the Roof” @ Sand Lake Center for the Arts, Averill Park. Co-directed by Sue Frost and Val Kavanaugh, the Circle Theatre Players present the universal story about preserving the essence of tradition in the face of inevitable change. THEATER: “Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival” @ the Palace Theatre, Albany. Mickey Mouse and friends rock the world with the stars from “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin” and Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story” in their new touring show, as the Disney hits are remixed to today’s sounds of hip hop, pop, swing, reggae, rock, country and much more. 1, 4 & 7pm.
