Shaun O’Boyle @ Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield. Berkshire-based photographer Shaun O’Boyle was selected to participate in the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers program from October to December 2015. This exhibition includes scenes of nature as well as architecture — both the historic huts built over 100 years ago during the first explorations of the continent and present day science stations and field camps. TOTEM @ Mandeville Gallery, Schenectady. Union College junior Abby Golodik finds inspiration in the repeated creation of a single shape, a “totem,” which she crafts in a multitude of media in both two and three dimensions. With each iteration, the totem affects more closely its creator’s intention. (Through August 21)

Picasso: Encounters @ The Clark, Williamstown. An exhibition that explores Pablo Picasso’s interest in and experimentation with large-scale printmaking throughout his career. (Through August 27)

10×10 Exhibition @ Saratoga Arts, Saratoga Springs. A huge salon show, by a wide range of artists, of more than 550 works , most priced about $100. (Through September 2)

Guitar: The Instrument That Rocked the World @ Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield. A family-friendly installation that examines the science, sound, and cultural impact of the guitar and contains more than 70 instruments, from the rare and antique to the popular and innovative, as well as performance videos, audio stations, hands-on interactives, models, touchscreens and photographs. (Through September 4)

Sara Greenberger Rafferty: Gloves Off and Cameron Martin: Abstracts @ University Art Museum, Albany. Recent video, sculpture, and photography by Sara Greenberger Rafferty that explores her ongoing fascination with domesticity, the body, consumer culture, fashion, violence and stand-up comedy; and a new body of non-objective paintings by Cameron Martin that address current generative roles for abstraction. (Through September 9)

An Inner World: Seventeenth-Century Dutch Genre Painting @ The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown. Genre paintings, or scenes of everyday life, flourished in the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth century. This exhibition explores the work of Gerrit Dou and his contemporaries by considering tradition and innovation in the representation of figures in interior spaces, individuals in moments of contemplation or quiet exchange, and the enduring taste among collectors for works created by fijnschilders, or fine painters. Also on display: Looking North and South: European Prints and Drawings, 1500-1650, an examination of how artists responded to the work of their contemporaries in different regions of early modern Europe. (Through September 17)

Lex and Love @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. In two new chapters in his Democratic Intuition project, Meleko Mokgosi investigates the daily experiences of diverse populations who occupy southern Africa, exploring the role that gendering plays in specific cultural and socio-economic relations.

Also on display: Robert Rauschenberg: Autobiography, an exhibition that combines archival documents and original works of art that speak to the ways in which Rauschenberg both found himself and inserted himself in the world; and Accession Number, an exhibition that explores the prioritization and valuation of museum acquisitions. (Through September 17)

Ellsworth Kelly @ The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls. Two companion exhibitions: Ellsworth Kelly: Slow Curve, which includes seventy prints that examine the artist’s experimentation with curved fields of color, and Ellsworth Kelly: Fruits & Flowers, twenty-six lithographs that reveal the sources of Kelly’s non-rectilinear shapes. (Through September 17)

The Coffins of Paa Joe and the Pursuit of Happiness @ The School, Kinderhook. A large-scale exhibition that honors the Ghanaian legacy of abebuu adekai, or fantasy coffins, that celebrate death and the afterlife, sculpted in the form of objects representative of the deceased and their interests. In 2004, Claude Simard, the late co-founder of Jack Shainman Gallery, commissioned thirteen coffins in the form of European castles erected along the Gold Coast in the 15th century, which served as holding pens for America-bound slaves.

2017 Exhibition by Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region @ Albany Institute of History and Art, Albany. Established in 1936, this annual, juried exhibition documents the work of artists working within a 100-mile radius of the Capital District. (Through September 3)

If I had Possession over Judgment Day – Collections of Claude Simard @ The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, Saratoga Springs. Love Apple Farm, now owned by Francis Greenburger, founder of Art Omi, inaugurates its new exhibition space with this group exhibition of works by Andrea Arrubla, Ben Thorp Brown, Noa Charuvi, Wojciech Gilewicz, Frances Goodman, Marisa Morán Jahn, Marie Christine Katz, Kakyoung Lee, Michael Mandiberg, Joiri Minaya, Debra Priestly, Jean Shin, Aram Han Sifuentes, Paul Anthony Smith, Maayan Strauss, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Rodrigo Valenzuela and Elizabeth White. Inventing America: Rockwell and Warhol @ Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge. The first exhibition linking Norman Rockwell and Andy Warhol, two iconic visual communicators who embraced populism, shaped national identity and opened new ways of seeing in twentieth century America. The show includes original iconic artworks; process materials and studies; archival photography, manuscripts and documents; film/video footage and personal artifacts. (Through October 29)

No to the Invasion: Breakdowns and Side Effects @ Center for Curatorial Studies, Annandale-on-Hudson. An exhibition of works drawn from the collection of the Barjeel Art Foundation, a collecting philanthropic institution based in the United Arab Emirates, featuring works dating from 1990 to 2016 that examine social, political, and economic histories from the shared geo-political space of the Arab-speaking world. Also on display: Picture Industry, a historical survey of photography. (Through October 29)

Montgomery Place Campus, Annandale-on-Hudson. A new seasonal exhibition focusing on the antique garden implements used at Montgomery Place for vegetable gardening, landscaping, orchard care and ornamental floral display. (Through October 31)

Wooden Forms @ Turn Park Art Space, West Stockbridge. An exhibit that explores wood as a sculptural material through the practices of two artists, Ben Butler and Jim Holl. Two temporary, site-specific sculptures will be installed on the territory of the park and an exhibition of related drawings and models will be shown at the Workshop Gallery. (Through October 31)

The Hudson River School @ Albany Institute of History and Art, Albany. Due to its popularity, the Institute is expanding its exhibition from earlier this year in this reinstallation of nearly 90 Hudson River School paintings in the Hearst Gallery on the museum’s third floor. Opening reception: Tuesday, July 25, 6:30-8pm.

Making: Then and Now @ Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield. An exhibition of contemporary works that explore the connection between artists today and an historic utopian movement in the Berkshires, featuring artworks exhibited in the Village’s historic spaces by Gregory Crewdson, Don Gummer, Stephen Hannock, Jenny Holzer, Maya Lin and David Teeple. (Through November 12)

Elizabeth King: Radical Small MASS MoCA, North Adams. A solo exhibition combining small sculptures and large videos, by Richmond, Virginia-based artist Elizabeth King.

Branding the AfroFuture @ Schaffer Library Learning Common, Schenectady. Works by Stacey Robinson that explore ideas of “Black Utopias” as spaces of peace away from colonial influence by considering Black protest movements and the art movements that document(ed) them. (Through March, 2018)

Summer Season Opening @ Art Omi, Ghent. The summer season opens with new sculptures on view in the Fields by Tony Tasset, Tom Burr, Angela Bulloch and Matt Wedel. In the Benenson Visitors Center, a site-specific installation by André Kruysen will be shown with drawings by Joan Banach.

Downtown is Pawsome Garden Party @ Tricentennial Park, Albany. Celebrating a local landmark and American icon, regional artists have customized twenty 3-foot-tall sculptures of Albany’s famous canine resident Nipper. The painted pups will grace various locations in downtown Albany throughout the next year. Proceeds from the Garden Party will benefit programs of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, as well as the continued revitalization of downtown Albany. (Through May, 2018)

Concinnitas Portfolio @ Mandeville Gallery, Schenectady. A portfolio of ten fine art aquatint prints featuring equations, expressions or formulas transcribed by ten notable mathematicians and physicists, in response to the prompt to record their ‘most beautiful mathematical expression.’ Each image was hand-drawn by each of the following participants: Sir Michael Atiyah, Enrico Bombieri, Simon K. Donaldson, Freeman Dyson, Murray Gell-Mann, Richard Karp, Peter Lax, David Mumford, Stephen Smale and Steven Weinberg. (Through August 2018)

Building 6 Grand Opening @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. MASS MoCA doubles in in size beginning May 28, with an all-day celebration featuring a members’ preview, a Soundsuit performance and a concert with veteran rockers CAKE. The galleries will feature long-term exhibits of works by Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeois, James Turrell, Jenny Holzer, Laurie Anderson and Gunnar Schonbeck. Additional artists to be shown in Building 6 include Spencer Finch, Dawn DeDeaux, Lonnie Holley, Mary Lum, Barbara Ernst Prey, Janice Kerbel, Joe Wardwell, Sarah Crowner, Richard Nonas and the Optics Division of the Metabolic Studio.
