The Power of Glitter: Exhibit Examines Gender, Identity, and the Body

The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College announced a new exhibition, “Serious Sparkle,” opened Saturday, August 10th.

The exhibit addresses contemporary artists’ use of glitter to explore the construction and representation of femininity, queer identity, and the body. Associated with craft, cosmetics, fashion, and queer culture, glitter as an artistic medium has emerged as a strategy for artists to examine issues relating to class, gender, race, and identity.

Largely drawn from the Tang Teaching Museum collection, the exhibit includes paintings by Carrie Moyer, a selection of works from Wangechi Mutu’s series, as well as works by Chitra Genesh, Ebony G. Patterson, and Alisa Sikelianos-Carter.

The exhibit runs through January 5, 2020.
