50 Years Strong – The Great Train Extravaganza Rolls into the Capital District on December 1st

Started 50 years ago, the Great Train Extravaganza is the largest model train showcase in eastern New York and is currently run by the Hudson-Berkshire Division of the National Model Railroad Association. It offers a wide range of activities and delights for train enthusiasts both young and old. This large event takes place in the Empire State Plaza Convention Center and includes a wide array of vendors. If it’s model train related and you can think of it, then it is probably there. Vendors will be selling landscaping pieces, parts for model trains, and other components.

Even if you’re a novice at the train world, you can still come to see the model train demonstrations that will be occurring. It’s lovely to see the dedication that each of these train craftsmen put into making the trains both accurate and functional. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and I am sure newcomers to the event will fall in love with the miniature world that they can build with their own hands.

The event is also appropriate for children, offering them a world of lego trains which they can explore as well as a building area for them to have some hands-on fun. They can also ride the Roaming Railroad that will be located in the plaza for an extra fee.

There is still limited room for vendors, so if you are interested on selling items, please email showchair@gtealbany.com.

Children under the age of twelve get in for free. Tickets for children over the age of 12 are $7. Part of the proceeds for this event will be going to support the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program.
