LIVE: The Wheel @ Jericho Drive-In, 7/21/2020
Another gorgeous summer night, another packed house at Jericho Drive-In for live music. On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, Jericho and Troy Savings Bank Music Hall hosted local Grateful Dead tribute THE WHEEL to the stage. As I have said in previous reviews, Jericho Drive-In has really captured lightning in a bottle with their drive-in concert series. I counted well over one hundred cars full of music fans, thirty minutes before the band even took the stage.
The Wheel had the folks in attendance dancing by the first note of “Feel Like a Stranger.” They were spaced out six feet apart, but it still felt communal. People, tired of being locked down, just getting down on the lawn. Families coming together to shake off the rust of the past few months.
The band consists of Andy Morse and vocals and rhythm guitar, Bryan Gautie on vocals and lead guitar, Jill Gautie on vocals and Rick Rothermel on keyboard and vocals. The rhythm section of Dave Pallas on bass and Joe Sorbero on drums, gave an anchor to the driving groove that is so essential to everything that is “the Dead.” The band members traded off lead vocal duties, each getting a chance to shine and to put their stamp on the music.
To close the night out, Jericho showed Monty Python’s Holy Grail. One of the funniest films of all time and a treat to see on the big screen. One of the overlooked things about these events is the ability to see classic films back where they were meant to be seen, not on a TV.
There are just a few more drive-in concerts left for the summer. I encourage you to get out and try something new. It is definitely a great time.
