The Attic Classic: As a young girl, Susan Yasinsky saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. Three months later she got a guitar and began lessons at her local music shop in Hudson. George Harrison had made the biggest impression; she too wanted to be a lead guitarist. To play in a rock n roll band looked to her like a pretty good job.

But first some life had to happen – going to college, passing the NY Bar exam, becoming an FBI Special Agent. After being transferred from Boston to New York City for a special assignment, the allure of CBGB’s and the scene had her grab that guitar again, once and for all, and form a band.

While in Rochester during the 1990’s, the movie “Pulp Fiction” was the catalyst for her forming an all-instrumental band, naming it The SurfTones.

By 1996 she was signed to Gee-Dee Music out of Hamburg Germany as Susan & The SurfTones. Within the year, the band had released two cd’s and toured Europe. Then Susan moved to Albany.

A new version of Susan & The SurfTones was formed, bringing in elements of garage rock and New Wave pop. Farfisa and Vox organist Kim13 and drummer Brian Goodman from 1313 Mockingbird Lane, along with former Eddie Angel (of Los Straitjackets fame) bassist Buck Malen were brought together and produced the 1998 record ‘Bitchin’.’

After ‘Bitchin” came out, there was a European tour and a couple more releases. In February 2001, they were back in Europe, but with Dave Anderson on bass. The video clip below was shot during that tour. At about the 2:20 mark is a short interview with Susan.
