Zigzag, a Brand-New Musical, to Debut at The Strand Theatre, May 6th-8th

HUDSON FALLS — Neal Herr knows money can’t buy him love, but watching “Ballet with the Beatles” inspired him to write about it. The result is “Zigzag,” a romantic comedy featuring 20 of Herr’s best relationship songs written throughout his 50-year career. The show opens May 6th for a three-day, four-performance run at The Strand Theatre in Hudson Falls, New York.

“Nine drafts later, ‘Zigzag’ is a full-length, small-cast original musical about love over time,” ~ Neal Herr

Through song and dance, “Zigzag” tells the nuanced story of aging Cowboy and Butterfly, who look back on their young romance, which was complicated by Cowboy’s boss, Tender, and Butterfly’s abusive manager, Bruce.

As a singer/songwriter and writer/composer of musicals, Herr is credited with more than 800 songs. He earned a Master of Fine Art degree in musical theater writing from New York University and has worked with Broadway stars and writers. Now a retired English professor, performer, and producer, Herr weaves acoustic guitar-based music with roots in country, musical theater, pop, rock, and Cajun, as young Cowboy and Butterfly fall in love through tap, ballet, jazz, and ballroom dance.

The musical’s songs have been honored with best song awards, earned multiple grants and feature full-band arrangements developed in 10 tribute shows at The Strand.

“Zigzag” is funded in part by a LARAC (Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council)  Arts Grant. The show stars Alan Dunham, Liz Winge, Gigi Bull, Tommy Socolof, Arianna Dreher, and Travis Brunell, and is directed by Nicole McDonald, with choreography by Timothy Frost.

Prominent regional musicians performing in the band include Michael Craner on bass, McCoy on fiddle, Rich LaPlante and Donnie Moore on drums, Anthime Miller on cello, and Herr on guitar.

“Zigzag” is produced by Adirondack Institute, an unincorporated nonprofit charitable organization.
