The Strand Theatre to Host Opera Night: The Ship’s Captain, May 19th

HUDSON FALLS – On May 19th, The Strand Theatre in Hudson Falls will be hosting “Opera Night! The Ship’s Captain.” The one-act parody opera by Carl Blum features music of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and others re-worked into the tale of two orphaned nieces and the marriage quest of a ship’s captain. For this event, the original German 1817 libretto has been updated and translated by Byron Nilsson, who is also the stage director. The show will begin at 7:00 pm.

The pit orchestra consists of flute, violin, guitar and piano. All three singers, Yvonne Trobe, soprano; Joelle Lachance, mezzo-soprano; Vince Gover, baritone, are veterans of Ohio Light Opera, and Trobe and Lachance are also former Glimmerglass Festival young artists. Mr. Gover is also a composer. His one-act pandemic operetta Lend Me a Roll has been viewed thousands of times on Youtube. The singers will be accompanied by Musicians of Ma’alwyck.

Musicians of Ma’alwyck have a long association with opera revival. In 2009 the ensemble reconstructed George Washington’s favorite opera The Poor Soldier and paired it with Glimmerglass Opera to present a sold-out series of performances that drew national attention. The ensemble is in residence at the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site and has been featured on NPR, PBS, and other broadcast media.
