Tony was born in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1949, and raised in a home filled with music. There were Broadway scores and a sweeping range of classical music, from Stravinsky to Beethoven. (The first thing Trischka learned to play on the banjo, in fact, was the Ninth Symphony.) The wide-open American vistas of Aaron Copland had an especially potent spiritual and visceral impact on him, as did the folk music his left-leaning father held dear. The Almanac Singers, the solo work of its founding members Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, and Lead Belly’s children’s LP were in constant rotation.

In March of 2020, Tony was touring Spain when THE NEWS hit and he beat a speedy retreat home. Like so many artists, he made the most of lockdown, performing weekly virtual “QuaranTony” shows to benefit a variety of charities, as well as composing a plethora of new banjo tunes. In addition, he completed work on Shall We Hope, a labor of love about the civil war, which he has shepherded through 12 years of development. Ahead of its release, a video of the album’s “Christmas Cheer (This Weary Year)” landed on a Rolling Stone best-of list, and was described by Jon Parales (New York Times) as having “virtuosic picking… with a coda of elegant string-band counterpoint.” Released on January 29th, 2021, Shall We Hope is a dramatized listening experience. It invites its audience into the lives of characters from America’s past as they grapple with the hard realities of war and death, and the meaning of freedom.
