Back to the Future: The Musical is set to tech at Proctors in 2024

Lead producer Colin Ingram, together with Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, the creators of the movie trilogy Back to the Future, have exciting news to share- the 2022 Olivier Award-winning show, BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical, is set to start a North American tour in 2024. The tour will begin at Proctors in Schenectady with four preview performances from June 4th to 6th, followed by its official tour opening at the KeyBank State Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio. Afterward, more tour stops and casting will be revealed. Tickets will be available to KeyBank and theREP subscribers starting May 31st, with single tickets for general audiences available soon afterward.

The Broadway opening of BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical is scheduled for August 3rd, 2023, at Winter Garden Theatre. The musical’s West End production in London officially opened on September 13th, 2021, and has been watched by over 800,000 people until now. It won prestigious awards like the Best New Musical Olivier Award, WhatsOnStage Awards, and Broadway World Award. The original world premiere preceded this at the Manchester Opera House on March 11th, 2020.

The details of the musical are as follows: It is adapted from the Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment film and features a book by Bob Gale. The music and lyrics were composed by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, with additional tracks from the movie, such as “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode”. Bob Gale and Alan Silvestri were the co-writers and composers of the movie, respectively. The musical will be directed by Tony Award winner John Rando and feature a multi-Tony and Olivier Award-winning design team. It will also involve choreography by Chris Bailey, musical supervision and arrangements by Nick Finlow, illusions by Chris Fisher, orchestrations by Ethan Popp and Bryan Crook, dance arrangements by David Chase, and casting by Tara Rubin.

The musical follows the movie’s plot- teenage rocker Marty McFly is accidentally sent back in time to 1955, and he must make sure his high school-aged parents fall in love in order to save his own future.

Bob Gale said, “If Bob Zemeckis and I time traveled back to 1980 and told our younger selves that the script they were struggling to write would become a Broadway musical 43 years later, they’d kick us out of their office and call us crazy. […] Now Bob and I are eager to share our musical vision with New York audiences. The London production exceeded our original expectations, and we are certain the Broadway version will be even better.” Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard added, “The magic of musical theatre presented us with the possibility of adding a new dimension and depth to our familiar Hill Valley residents. We are thrilled and excited to invite you to join us on this epic journey through time.”

Colin Ingram, lead producer, said, “Following London and soon Broadway, we are delighted to take BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical on the road. We look forward to entertaining and thrilling audiences with the moving and spectacular musical version.”

The Original Cast Recording of BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical is now available from Sony Masterworks Broadway, with a deluxe two-disc edition releasing on June 30th. Additionally, a 240-page hardcover book named Creating Back to the Future The Musical will be released on July 3rd. The movie Back to the Future, starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, hit theaters in 1985 and earned over $360 million at the box office worldwide. The total box office of the three-film franchise was over $1.8 billion.
