HVWG’s Upcoming Literary Events (May 11 – 17, 2023)

We have so much going on in the regional literary community that it is sometimes hard to keep up. Here’s a look at some of the lit events, readings, open mics, and workshops coming up this week.

Thursday, May 11

1:30 PM – Howdunnits Mystery Writers Group @ Albany Public Library – Howe Branch

The Howdunnits provide a safe and welcoming venue to share your writing and to give and receive feedback from others.

6:00 PM – The Hudson River Memoir Group

The Hudson River Memoir Group has been going strong for six years. The group meets, via Zoom, on the second Thursday of the month.

6:30 PM – Alexandra Auder in conversation with Jo Ann Beard @ Morton Memorial Library

Alexandra Auder talks about her moving and wickedly funny memoir, “Don’t Call Me Home,”  with author Jo Ann Beard.

7:00 PM – Word Thursdays Online featuring Frank Haberle and Alvin Eng

Word Thursdays Online featuring Frank Haberle and Alvin Eng will broadcast live on Thursday, May 11 at 7 PM EST.

7:00 PM – Calling All Poets featuring Ruth Danon, Greg Miller, and Matthew J. Spireng @ Greenkill Gallery

Green Kill Sessions presents Calling All Poets(CAPS), Thursday, May 11, 7 PM. Mike Jurkovic hosts the poets Ruth Danon, Greg Miller, and Matthew J. Spireng. There will be an opportunity for open mic reading after the featured readers.

Friday, May 12

9:00 AM – Early Literacy Storytime! @ Troy Public Library

Kids ages 0-5 are welcome to this early literacy story

Saturday, May 13

12:30 PM – Writing from Home(s) with Martha Collins

Take this #poetry workshop to revisit places you’ve called home, to connect to those places with their historical roots & implications, & expand your conception of home. Register at writerscenter.org/calendar/maycollins/

1:00 PM – DiBiase Contest Reading @ William K. Sanford Town Library

DiBiasepoetry.com and the Hudson Valley Writers Guild will sponsor a reading on Saturday, May 13, for winners and finalists in the annual DiBiase Poetry Contest. Readers will include Guild members Cheryl Rice, Anna Boughtwood, Jodi Frank, Tom Corrado, Jackie Craven, Marianna Boncek, Alan Catlin, Tom Bonville, and Margaret McGowen.

2:00 PM – Woodstock Poetry Society Reading featuring Jerrice J. Baptiste and Mary K O’Melveny @ Woodstock Library

Poets Jerrice J. Baptiste and Mary K O’Melveny will be featured, followed by an open mic at the next meeting of the Woodstock Poetry Society. 

3:00 PM – Karen DeBonis Book Signing @ The Book House

Karen DeBonis signs and discusses her new book, “Growth: A Mother, Her Son, and the Brain Tumor They Survived.”

Sunday, May 14

2:00 PM – 2nd Sunday @ 2 – Poetry + Prose @ Collar City Mushrooms

The 2nd Sunday @ two open mics for poetry and prose is in its 12th year, supporting emerging, published and writers in-between. 

Monday, May 15

1:30 PM – Monday Memoir Writing Group @ Albany Public Library – Howe Branch

Participate in a group of memoir writers and get feedback.

7:00 PM – Poetic Vibe @ The Fish Market

Poet, artist, and performer D. Colin hosts the weekly Poetic Vibe series, a dynamic night of poetry and spoken word.

Tuesday, May 16

10:30 AM – Story Time @ North Albany

Please join us in the Large Meeting Room for stories, fingerplays, songs and rhymes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers, and their caregivers.

6:30 PM – Hernan Diaz in conversation with Bill Clegg @ Morton Memorial Library

Oblong Books celebrates the paperback release of “Trust” – recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2023 – with author Hernan Diaz sitting down for a conversation with Bill Clegg.

Wednesday, May 17

6:00 PM – Poetry Night featuring Teresa Costa @ Java Blue Coffee and Market

Robert Milby hosts a monthly poetry open mic with featured poets in Montgomery, NY. Featured poet: Teresa Costa + open poetry reading

7:00 PM – Milkweed Poetry Workshop @ Buckbee Center

Featured poet, workshop, open reading at Buckbee Center (2 Colonial Avenue, Warwick, NY) on the third Wednesday of every month (meeting on Zoom all other Wednesdays )
