Concert Review: Mike Purcell and Company @ Jazz on Jay, 06/22/2023

It was a beautiful first day of summer in Schenectady. Jazz on Jay, the weekly free noontime concert, featured the sounds of Mike Purcell and Co. Mike and his band entertained the crowd with a variety of music, ranging from standards and Dixieland to modern-day pop tunes. Mike is a third-generation piano player who clearly echoed what he has heard and added his own interpretations to those tunes that are familiar to all of us.

His band, consisting of veterans of the local jazz scene, gave him more than just support during the hour-and-a-half set.

Linda Brown – bass
Bill Jenson – drums
James Corigliano – saxophone

As an added bonus, Heather of Create Community Studios was simultaneously painting during the set and received help from young members of the audience.

Next week’s concert on 6/29 will feature the Peter Van Keuren Trio from noon to 1:30 PM.
