Attic Classic: Doug Sertl‘s career as a jazz and big band trombonist began during his high school years at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. He then went to The Crane School of Music in Potsdam for one year, leaving to join the Paul Anka Band. From that, his decades long career has taken him around the world, with performances and recording both as a sideman and as guest artist with many of the jazz greats, as well as appearing and recording with his own groups.

While working in various road bands and orchestras in the early 1980’s, he formed the Doug Sertl Big Band, recording their first highly acclaimed album in 1981. This gave Doug some early visibility throughout the jazz world, and also began his long association with local baritone sax great Nick Brignola.

This led to the formation of Doug Sertl’s Jazz Menagerie, which featured Nick. The group headed into Cathedral Sound Studios in Rensselaer, releasing an album titled ‘Menagerie’ in 1982, which showcased the ensemble’s collective musical talents.

The Local 518 Attic Classic is the piece that starts off Side Two of the record, Antônio Carlos Jobim’s “Triste” with soloists being Sertl, Brignola, and Phil Markowitz on piano.
