Whether you attended or missed Bob Dylan at Proctors for his show in late October, your chance to experience his discography is here. While Dylan himself will not be returning to Schenectady, the 2017 musical “Girl from the North Country,” will make Proctors in one of its stops from Dec. 5 – 10 as they embark on their Fall 2023 – Summer 2024 tour.
The musical, written and directed by Conor McPherson with music and lyrics by Dylan, derived its title from the 1963 song from Dylan’s album, “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” While the song is from the early 60s, the musical features a variety of songs throughout the entirety of Dylan’s career, spanning multiple decades.
The Irish playwright reimagined several of Dylan’s songs and set the scene in 1934 Duluth, Minn., during the Great Depression. The story revolves around a guesthouse owned by the struggling Laine family. The guesthouse becomes a temporary refuge for a diverse group of characters, each facing their own challenges and secrets. Against the backdrop of the era’s hardships, the characters find solace and hope in music. The narrative interweaves the lives of the Laine family, their guests, and the town’s residents, exploring themes of love, loss, redemption, and the enduring human spirit.

The production was nominated for seven awards, including Best Musical, at the 2022 Tony Awards and a recipient of the award for Best Orchestration. Free with a ticket for the performance, Proctors offers, TheatreTalks, an opportunity for attendees to engage in a discussion with the cast and crew following the Thursday, Dec. 7 matinee performance, at the GE Theatre.
For those in need of accessibility services, an American Sign Language (ASL) performance has been scheduled for Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.
Attendees should be aware that the performance contains elements that may affect some viewers. These include flashing lights, the realistic sounds of live gunshots, on-stage smoking, and mature language.
