Hangar on the Hudson set to host local acts this weekend

Indie folk and rock genres take over The Hangar on the Hudson this weekend with top-tier local performers.

The concert and events venue at 675 River St. in Troy features local and national acts. On Friday night, The Figgs and Sarah Borges will defy the rock genre, while on Saturday, indie folk groups Reese Fulmer & the Carriage House Band and Hold on Honeys will bring their unique sounds and lyricism.

The Figgs and Sarah Borges bring rock ’n’ roll to Troy at 8 p.m.

Borges knows how to get an audience’s attention. Whether connecting with colleagues over the years or creating within her songs vivid portraits of people’s lives, including her own, Borges is able to create emotionally resonant songs.

More significantly, she has created her own following by connecting, through her own charismatic, down-to-earth spirit, with her audience. Whether they’re fans from the beginning of her career or just hearing Borges perform for the first time, the soulful music she performs allows listeners to connect with her — and one another.

Following Borges’ performance, The Figgs, a group from Saratoga Springs that has been performing for more than 30 years, will take the stage. The Figgs are a rock group consisting of three men: Pete, Mike and Pete. The three were inducted into the Capital Region Music Hall of Fame in 2021 and released their 16th LP in 2022, “Chemical Shake.”

The group explores the rock ’n’ roll idiom in an ever-extending reach. From new wave and punk rock to power pop, folk rock and cool RnB, the Figgs craft endless songs that defy genres. The Hangar on the Hudson audience can expect just that.

Reese Fulmer & The Carriage House Band and Hold on Honeys will bring soulful indie folk lyricism to the venue starting at 8 p.m.

Both groups have drawn acclaim in the Capital Region music scene over the past two years, each selling out their respective appearances at the legendary Caffé Lena in Saratoga Springs and earning glowing reviews for their live performances, along with multiple regional awards and nominations.

Hold on Honeys is a folk-influenced acoustic band based in Troy. The group, consisting of Emily Curro, Raya Malcolm, Shannon Rafferty, Connor Armbruster and Michael Gregg, offers tight-knit harmonies to nourish the soul and invigorate the senses.

The group released a live record from the Jive Hive in 2022, as an “experiment.”

“Hold on Honeys Live at the Jive Hive” is everything a live record should be — authentic and inviting, tied together with fierce passion from everyone involved,” said Sabrina Truehart of Nippertown. “From the vocal nuances that differ with every song to the sisterly connection of Curro, Malcolm and Rafferty, Hold on Honeys has proven they deserve a place in the folk realm with their newest release.”

Reese Fulmer & The Carriage House Band will take the stage after Hold on Honeys to perform their signature warm notes with a poetic touch.

The indie folk group challenges the traditional relationship between a songwriter and his band with a fluidly rotating cast of top-notch players and a flair for experimentation that combine for a unique and mesmerizing live performance. At The Hangar, Fulmer’s lineup will feature James Gascoyne on bass, Jimi Woodul on electric guitar, Connor Dunn on saxophone and Chris Bloniarz on octave mandolin.
Fulmer and his band leave listeners both wanting more and wanting to know more.

“Fulmer is a songwriter whose lyrics expose parts of myself to me that I often cannot put language to, and for that I’m both grateful and mystified,” wrote Laura DaPolito for Nippertown. “Each time I hear him live, the music is different because the band members are different — and it brings capacity for greater variety within the beauty of the songs.”

These two groups will likely leave you feeling warmer and lighter, having shared an experience of reaching toward emotion and letting it go together.
