“The Father,” a darkly humorous and poignant play by Zeller — originally written in French and translated to English by Christopher Hampton — provides an unsentimental, emotionally intense look at the world through the eyes of a man experiencing dementia.

The play was adapted into a 2020 film of the same name, which won Academy Awards for Hampton (Best Adapted Screenplay) and Anthony Hopkins (Best Actor).

SCP’s production features a cast of Amy Hausknecht, Colleen Lovett, Gary Maggio, Tony Pallone, Ashley Schuliger and Michael Schaefer. The play runs for 90 minutes with no intermission.

Also upcoming from Schenectady Civic Players are “August: Osage County” by Tracy Letts, directed by Michael McDermott, from March 15-24; and “Play It Again, Sam” by Woody Allen, directed by Evan Jones, from May 10-19.
