A Multimedia Exploration of Gender Politics @ MASS MoCA [Berkshire on Stage]
Cultural partners Jacob’s Pillow and MASS MoCA present a one-night-only work-in-progress showing of performing artist, choreographer, and TEDGlobal Oxford Fellow Richard Move’s XXYY at 8pm on Friday (January 20) at MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center in North Adams. The new collaboration is conceived and directed by Move, with an original sound score by electronic music pioneer Martux_m and costumes by theater artist Alba Clemente.
Just what the groundbreaking work looks like is still to be finalized, but there are excellent clues contained within even this brief excerpt of Martha @… The 1963 Interview (see below), Move’s theatrical recreation of the legendary 92nd Street Y interview with Martha Graham and dance critic and historian Walter Terry. Move channels Graham and Tony Award-nominated actress/playwright Lisa Kron takes on the role of Terry.
At MASS MoCA, Move is working on XXYY, a multi-sensorial, theatrical show exploring gender binaries, which will be presented alongside Martha@…20, a 20th-anniversary performance of his hallmark show celebrating Martha Graham. It promises to be an eye-opening evening of dance and intellectual stimulation.
